Book Review: Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton

PRETTY. COVER. MUCH. BEAUTIFUL.

Happy book birthday to Rebel of the Sands! Today is its release date here in the United States and let me tell you all about it.

What’s it about? (summary from Goodreads )

She’s more gunpowder than girl—and the fate of the desert lies in her hands.

Mortals rule the desert nation of Miraji, but mystical beasts still roam the wild and barren wastes, and rumor has it that somewhere, djinni still practice their magic. But there’s nothing mystical or magical about Dustwalk, the dead-end town that Amani can’t wait to escape from.

Destined to wind up “wed or dead,” Amani’s counting on her sharpshooting skills to get her out of Dustwalk. When she meets Jin, a mysterious and devastatingly handsome foreigner, in a shooting contest, she figures he’s the perfect escape route. But in all her years spent dreaming of leaving home, she never imagined she’d gallop away on a mythical horse, fleeing the murderous Sultan’s army, with a fugitive who’s wanted for treason. And she’d never have predicted she’d fall in love with him…or that he’d help her unlock the powerful truth of who she really is.

My thoughts:

*sings and runs twirling this book around* This book is magical. Really. I’d be lying if it weren’t the cover that drew me in originally but it had so many components that made me want to pick it up and review.

Arabian elements? (squeals)

Romance that’s not a love triangle? (faints)

Strong female protagonists? (yipee!)

This book is the first of a trilogy and honestly, I’m not sure I can wait for a sequel and it only came out today! My favorite part of the story has to be Amani, the main character. She’s a 16 year old girl that is frantically trying to escape the life she’s always known and is willing to do anything to find better prospects for herself, which I always find admirable. I love the relationship that forms between Amani and Jin, the foreigner who somehow gets entangled into her journey. They find themselves in this waging war and quest for truth that enthralls readers into thinking what will happen to these charming characters.

This book pulls you through a bumpy and enchanting ride through the desert that will leave you captivated. I loved the interesting characters and all the magical and fantasy elements. I enjoyed the romantic pairing because it was a slow growing love interest while still not being the main focus of the plot.

I gave this book 5/5 stars 🙂

Well, that’s all for this review. I’m still kinda new at this so let me know how I did and what you guys want from book reviews down below.
